Living Future Collaborative South Africa is offering you a webinar on topics related to Embodied Carbon of Materials.

There are two types of carbon emissions related to buildings, namely Operational Carbon (emissions related to operating the building in terms of electricity use etc) and Embodied Carbon (emissions related to producing the materials that are used to build the building). This webinar is focussing on the latter: Embodied Carbon of Materials. Understanding how much embodied carbon is in the building’s materials is essential to create more sustainable buildings. The first presentation will outline the basics of embodied energy of materials and how do you address this in the design of a building. The second presentation will talk about low embodied energy materials, namely materials that are made from recycled materials. And lastly, a presentation on how to calculate the embodied energy of a building and what tools are available.

The aim of the Living Building Challenge Water Petal is to ensure designs that treat water as a precious resource. A water cycle system of a building must leave nothing to waste. Participants will develop an understanding of why water is such a critical issue in the built environment and the positive impact professionals can have through conservation, reuse, and on-site capture and treatment.

This event will take a look at the requirements of the Water Petal by means of a case study. Another local case study will explore what is possible and what has been done.
